Guinea-Bissau Kicks Off ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Celebrations With Symbolic Treaty Reenactment

Guinea-Bissau has officially launched its line-up of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with a colourful ceremony held in Bissau.

The event, jointly organised by the National ECOWAS Office under the Ministry of Planning and Regional Integration and the Office of the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea-Bissau, brought together high-ranking dignitaries, including representatives of the Prime Minister, the Foreign Affairs Minister, cabinet members, ECOWAS Ambassadors, and diplomats from the African Union, European Union, and United Nations.

In their addresses, representatives of the host government and ECOWAS leadership reflected on the achievements of the regional bloc and emphasised the need for continued unity and cooperation. The tone was one of hope and determination for a stronger, more integrated West Africa.

A standout moment was the symbolic reenactment of the signing of the original ECOWAS Treaty first signed in Lagos on 28 May 1975 performed by ECOWAS Ambassadors and representatives of non-accredited member states. The gesture served as a powerful reminder of the shared vision and enduring partnership that has defined the organisation over the past five decades.

As the celebrations continue across the region, Guinea-Bissau’s ceremony set a high standard blending reflection, symbolism, and renewed commitment to the ECOWAS dream of regional solidarity and development.
