NYSC Still Key To National Unity – DG Reaffirms Amid Reform Talks
By Prosper Okoye
National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has reaffirmed the relevance of the National Youth Service Corps as a vital force for national unity and youth development.
Visiting corps members at the Benue State orientation camp in Wannune, Nafiu urged them to see the service year as a chance to grow, serve the nation, and embrace Nigeria’s diversity. “Youths are the leaders of tomorrow, and NYSC is here to shape that future,” he said.
He stressed discipline, responsible social media use, and dressing appropriately.
Touring an exhibition of products made under the in-camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) scheme, Nafiu praised the corps members’ innovation and encouraged them to pursue self-employment.
To boost morale, he donated two cows and shared his contact details with corps members, assuring them of his support.
Benue NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Veronica Garba, reported that 1,558 corps members had registered, engaging in activities like solar installation, fashion design, catering, and ICT.
SAED official Pupshik James urged them to take their skills seriously after camp.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has launched a reform drive to strengthen the NYSC.
A review committee will explore funding models, infrastructure upgrades, and policies to make the scheme more impactful.
Among proposals is a plan to extend NYSC to two years, focusing on deeper skill acquisition and greater national service, especially in rural areas.
