Information Minister Champions Media Literacy Drive In Schools
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has taken the national campaign for media and information literacy to the classroom, engaging secondary school students with a message on digital responsibility and the power of passion.
Speaking at the TEDxNTICAbujaYouth 2025 event held at Nigerian Tulip International College, Abuja, Idris urged young Nigerians to become critical consumers of online content, highlighting the dangers of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation in today’s digital world.
According to the Minister, the birth of the digital age brought opportunities,and also serious challenges.
He noted that communication, which was once a unifier, is now often misused hence Media and information literacy is essential for navigating the space responsibly.
The Minister shared how an early passion for broadcasting was temporarily derailed by family advice to pursue higher education, saying that the redirection, eventually paved the way for his current role as Nigeria’s chief government spokesperson.
Idris also announced that Nigeria will soon host the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja in Abuja to train participants from around the world to navigate the digital landscape and resist the pull of online misinformation.
