The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a proposed N40 billion budget allocation for 2025, successfully persuading the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters to consider its N126 billion proposal.
During a budget defense session on Friday, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, described the N40 billion allocation as grossly inadequate, saying it would not cover one-third of the commission’s projected expenses for 2025.
He highlighted the financial strain posed by upcoming elections, including off-cycle polls, bye-elections in 21 constituencies, and the Anambra Governorship election.
Professor Yakubu also cited the additional costs of implementing the new minimum wage and ongoing demands for credible electoral processes, urging the lawmakers to support INEC’s constitutional responsibilities with sufficient funding.
“We have detailed plans for the N126 billion we require for 2025. Elections in Nigeria are a huge burden that demand adequate funding,” he stressed.
The Joint Committee, chaired by Senator Sarafadeen Alli (APC Oyo South), appeared convinced. Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP FCT) affirmed the urgency of meeting INEC’s financial needs, stating, “The issue is not whether to provide the N126 billion but how to source it.”
The committee subsequently held a closed-door session with INEC officials to deliberate on funding strategies for the 2025 budget.
