BRICS Leaders Adopt New Delhi Declaration, Push Stronger Global South Voice

BRICS leaders have renewed their push for a fairer global order, adopting the New Delhi Declaration with a call for reforms that would give developing countries greater representation in international institutions.

The declaration was adopted at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, where leaders backed comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, as well as changes to the international financial architecture.

India’s Secretary for Economic Relations, Shri Sudhakar Dalela, said the summit was a significant milestone as India assumed the BRICS chairmanship for the fourth time, coinciding with the grouping’s 20th anniversary.

Under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, India hosted more than 350 BRICS meetings throughout the year, covering ministerial engagements, business forums and people-centred initiatives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a stronger voice for the Global South and urged BRICS to remain focused on practical cooperation and development outcomes.

He proposed four new initiatives, including a BRICS Troika mechanism, a roadmap on global governance reform, a Seafarer Emergency Support Initiative Network and a Global South Negotiation Support Initiative to strengthen the capacity of officials and young professionals in emerging areas such as technology and global rule-making.

The leaders also discussed geopolitical conflicts and economic uncertainties, reaffirming diplomacy, dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes as key principles.

Dalela said the New Delhi Declaration was among the defining outcomes of India’s chairmanship, with an accompanying fact sheet outlining more than 50 practical outcomes across the four pillars of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.

The summit also featured a joint tree-planting initiative and the release of a commemorative postal stamp marking two decades of BRICS cooperation.
