WMO Warns of Escalating Heat in 2025, As Nigerians Brace for Climate Impacts

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned of the continuation of record-breaking heat in 2025, cautioning that unchecked human activities could accelerate climate change with catastrophic consequences.

The United Nations weather agency revealed that 2024 was the hottest year on record, capping a decade of unprecedented heat driven by human activities.

In response, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction in the first quarter of the year, offering a glimpse into the country’s climate future.

The impacts of rising temperatures are already being felt in Nigeria.

Medical professionals have urged citizens to take precautions against climate-sensitive illnesses, including measles, chickenpox, meningitis, and even skin cancer.

Dr. Kenneth Nwedu of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital harped on the importance of hydration and hygiene, advising parents to encourage their children to drink water regularly and practice handwashing or use sanitizers.

Farmers, too, are grappling with the devastating effects of climate change as last year’s severe heat waves and prolonged droughts hit agriculture hard.

To mitigate these challenges, the Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with NiMet to train farmers on cultivating resilient crops so that farmers can learn about improved crop varieties that can withstand heat, floods, and pests.

NiMet’s forthcoming climate prediction is expected to equip stakeholders with critical insights to manage climate risks, support livelihoods, and ensure sustainable food security for Nigerians facing a warming future.
