The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has launched a decisive operation, codenamed “Operation Karara,” leading to the arrest of 823 drivers for various traffic violations, including traffic light and zebra crossing infractions, within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. As a result of the operation, 923 fines have been issued, 189 vehicles impounded, and 634 licenses confiscated.
This aggressive enforcement campaign, initiated on September 2, 2024, is part of a broader strategy to curb dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to accidents and traffic congestion across the capital.
Recall that on September 1, 2024, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed had officially launched Operation Karara, with a clear mandate: to stamp out traffic light violations and reckless driving, which have become a growing menace on Abuja’s roads.
The operation is not only focused on arrests but also public education, aiming to create awareness about traffic regulations. By working closely with other security agencies, FRSC is determined to enhance traffic flow and safety throughout the city.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the early successes of Operation Karara, noting that traffic light violations are a major cause of road accidents and must be addressed urgently. He emphasized that this operation will continue in full force until there is a noticeable reduction in these dangerous behaviors.
He praised the dedication of the FRSC commanders and field operatives involved, urging them to intensify their patrols, especially at major intersections and during peak hours. Drivers arrested during the operation have been charged with offenses ranging from traffic light violations to dangerous driving and reckless disregard for road markings.
According to the Corps Commander, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Olusegun Ogungbemide, as the FRSC consolidates its gains from the operation, the Corps Marshal is appealing to motorists to comply with traffic regulations, urging cooperation with FRSC personnel to ensure safer roads for all.
