Youth Leaders Condemn Alleged Blocking Of Peter Obi’s Benue Humanitarian Visit
The humanitarian crisis in Benue, they argue, should not become another fault line in Nigeria’s increasingly heated political contest.
The Forum of National Youth Leaders of all Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN) has condemned the alleged obstruction of former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s planned humanitarian visit to Benue State on Tuesday.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Hon. Eze Onyebuchi Chukwu, the forum alleged that Obi and his delegation were stopped along Boko Road, near the Air Force Base in Makurdi, by individuals reportedly led by a Special Adviser to the Benue State Government.
Obi was in the state to commiserate with families and internally displaced persons affected by recent attacks in Yelwata and other communities, where more than 200 people were reportedly killed.
The youth leaders described the alleged incident as unacceptable in a democracy, arguing that political differences should not prevent humanitarian engagement or freedom of movement.
They called on the Benue State Government to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable, while urging security agencies to remain neutral and protect political and humanitarian actors.
The forum also appealed to political actors to embrace tolerance and restraint ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against the use of intimidation and thuggery as instruments of political engagement.
