Kano Gets Major Power Boost As FG Commissions New Transformer
Businesses along Kano’s Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass and major road corridors would gain better access to grid electricity following the commissioning of a new transmission facility at Walalambe.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, commissioned the 2 × 40 MVA, 132/33 kV transmission substation on Wednesday, 21 October, describing the project as a significant investment in Kano’s electricity infrastructure.
The facility is designed to ease pressure on existing transmission infrastructure, provide alternative supply routes and improve the flexibility of electricity distribution across the network.
Areas covered by the new infrastructure include Tokarawa Industrial Area, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road, the Eastern Bypass and adjoining communities.
A key feature is a dedicated 33 kV feeder to Lee Group of Companies, an industrial enterprise that has operated off-grid for more than 30 years.
Tegbe said the connection demonstrated the economic value of transmission investment by creating a route for an established industrial business to access grid electricity.
The Walalambe facility will also provide alternative supply arrangements for the Mariri, Jogana, Farm Centre and Zaria Road 33/11 kV injection substations, giving network operators more options to manage supply and respond to operational challenges.
Tegbe said the project reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening electricity infrastructure under the Renewed Hope agenda.
He commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Atlantic Engineering and Construction Company Limited, and the World Bank, which financed the project.
The minister urged host communities to protect the facility against vandalism, warning that damage to electricity infrastructure could interrupt trade, reduce working hours and disrupt household life.
He also congratulated Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting development initiatives and fostering partnerships for infrastructure investment.
The commissioning was part of a wider exercise involving four transmission substations. At Walalambe, Tegbe formally commissioned the additional 100 MVA, 132/33 kV power transformer, upgraded digital control and protection systems, and associated infrastructure.
While the project strengthens Kano’s transmission network, the reliability of electricity reaching homes and businesses will also depend on available generation and the performance of distribution infrastructure.
