Hope Rises In Peva As Army Arrests Suspected Gang Leader DJ Abam

Residents of Peva and surrounding communities are hoping for relief from years of alleged violence, extortion and intimidation following the reported arrest of Denen Joe, popularly known as DJ Abam, by Nigerian Army troops.

Abam was reportedly arrested following information from community members.

He is accused of leading a criminal network linked to kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, illegal levies, unlawful detention and killings.

Residents also alleged that he was involved in attacks on communities, the seizure of homes and land, and the killing of respected clan head, Zaki Sylvester Peter Suleagbough, who had reportedly spoken out against criminal activities.

The suspect was further accused of involvement in the murders of Terfa Iwambe and Paul Hwakar Ayuba, as well as an alleged ambush on special forces personnel in September 2025.

The number of casualties in the incident remains unclear.

Other allegations include collaboration with armed groups, sexual violence and the intimidation of residents who resisted his activities.

For communities said to have endured years of fear and displacement, the reported arrest has raised hopes of recovering seized property, securing justice for victims and dismantling wider criminal networks.

However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and the suspect’s arrest does not establish guilt. Authorities are expected to investigate the claims and determine whether sufficient evidence exists for prosecution.

For Peva residents, the priority is now lasting security and the freedom to live without fear of violence or intimidation.
