Odita Emerges DECAN President, Pledges Better Welfare, Stronger Security Partnerships

In a period when accurate security reporting is increasingly vital to national stability, veteran defence journalist Sunday Odita has emerged as the new President of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), promising to prioritise members’ welfare and strengthen collaboration with security institutions.

Odita was elected alongside a new executive committee during what members described as a peaceful and transparent election, signalling a new chapter for the association.

Other elected officials include Linus Aleke as Vice President, Musa Umar Bologi as Secretary, Benjamin Samson as Treasurer, Martha Ebere as Assistant Secretary, Kikelomo Okere as Financial Secretary, Ihotu Odoh as Welfare Officer, Agbor Jame as Provost, and Mathew Abi as Public Relations Officer.

In his acceptance speech, Odita said the welfare and professional growth of members would remain central to his administration, stressing that empowered journalists are better positioned to contribute meaningfully to national discourse.

He also pledged to deepen engagement between the media, military, and other security agencies to promote responsible reporting, transparency, and public trust.

According to him, the new executive will mobilise stakeholders across the defence and intelligence community to build stronger partnerships that support peace, stability, economic growth, and national development.

Odita paid tribute to troops serving in various operational theatres across the country, commending their sacrifices and dedication to safeguarding Nigeria.

He also lauded the leadership of the nation’s military chiefs for their efforts in addressing security challenges.

The new leadership is expected to build on past achievements by expanding professional development opportunities, improving members’ welfare, and strengthening DECAN’s role as a bridge between security institutions and the public.

The election ushers in a new two-year tenure focused on unity, professionalism, stakeholder engagement, and supporting national security through responsible journalism.
