Nigerian Youths Demand Leadership Transition By 2031, Raise Alarm Over Insecurity

As Nigeria grapples with persistent security challenges and growing calls for greater youth participation in governance, young political leaders across party lines have united to demand a clear roadmap for generational leadership transition.

The Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN) has called on all presidential candidates seeking the support of young Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election to publicly commit to handing over power to a younger, competent and patriotic Nigerian by 2031.

Speaking at a World Press Conference on the state of the nation, Chairman of the Forum, Hon. Comrade Eze Onyebuchi Chukwu, expressed deep concern over worsening insecurity across the country, describing the continued loss of lives to terrorism, banditry and kidnapping as unacceptable.

He condemned all forms of security sabotage, whether by criminal elements, collaborators or individuals benefiting from the nation’s security challenges, and urged the Federal Government, security agencies, state governments, traditional institutions and communities to intensify efforts to restore peace and safety nationwide.

The youth leaders also appealed to social media users to refrain from amplifying the activities and propaganda of criminal groups by sharing their videos, images and threats online, warning that such actions could inadvertently encourage further violence.

On youth inclusion, Chukwu stressed that young Nigerians make up the majority of the country’s population and play a decisive role in determining electoral outcomes, yet remain largely excluded from key decision-making positions.

He clarified that the Forum was not seeking to exclude older generations from leadership or demanding power in 2027, but rather advocating for a planned transition in 2031 that combines the energy and innovation of the youth with the experience and wisdom of elders.

According to him, the time has come for a sincere national conversation about Nigeria’s future, security and the place of young people in leadership and governance.
