A strong road safety system goes beyond traffic regulations; it also addresses the human behaviours that often lead to preventable crashes.

Recognising the link between substance abuse and road accidents, the Road Accident Prevention Network Centre (RAPNEC NG) has called for stronger collaboration between the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and non-governmental organisations working in Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).

The Road Accident Prevention Network Centre (RAPNEC NG), urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and civil society organisations to join a global campaign aimed at improving road safety and reducing drug demand across Nigeria.

The call was made as RAPNEC NG commenced Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 Snapshot Assessment, a global data collection initiative coordinated by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, a network of over 400 organisations operating in more than 100 countries.

According to RAPNEC NG, substance abuse remains a major contributor to road crashes, particularly among young drivers and commercial transport operators.

The organisation stressed the need to integrate drug demand reduction programmes into road safety initiatives, strengthen advocacy efforts, and improve data collection to support evidence-based policies.

Project Manager of RAPNEC NG, Ambassador George Ibok, said road safety extends beyond roads and vehicles to include human behaviour, noting that greater collaboration with NDLEA and DDR-focused organisations would help reduce preventable deaths and amplify Nigeria’s voice in global policy discussions.

The stakeholder engagement and data collection exercise ran from May 25 to 29, 2026, with participating organisations expected to gain access to advocacy toolkits, training opportunities and the global assessment report.

RAPNEC NG said the initiative would help showcase Nigeria’s road safety challenges and solutions on international platforms, including those of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.
