Army Warns Against MASSOB Memorial Directive, Says Move Threatens South-East Peace

As security agencies continue efforts to sustain stability in the South-East, the Nigerian Army has warned against what it described as an illegal directive by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) calling on churches to hold memorial services for victims of the Nigerian Civil War.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Headquarters Operation UDO KA said the directive was unlawful, provocative and capable of disrupting the peace currently enjoyed in the region.

The military acknowledged the pain of families who lost loved ones during the civil war and stressed that Nigeria already has recognised national platforms for honouring fallen heroes, including Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Nigerian Army Day Celebration and Independence Day.

Operation UDO KA alleged that sympathisers of MASSOB and IPOB were using the memorial directive to create tension and sow division.

It urged clerics, youths and residents to disregard the order and avoid activities that could threaten public peace.

The Army reassured churches and residents that they should continue their normal activities without fear, warning that anyone found disrupting public order or religious activities would face the full weight of the law.

It also reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces and other security agencies to protecting lives and property while maintaining peace across the South-East.
