Police Dismiss Officers Over Killing Of Delta Man, Forward Case For Prosecution
In a development that signals growing pressure for accountability within Nigeria’s security system, the Police Force has dismissed four officers linked to the controversial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The latest update, announced by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, revealed that ASP Nuhu, who allegedly shot the unarmed suspect, alongside three members of his team, have been arrested, dismissed from service, and recommended for prosecution.
According to the police, Mene Ogidi was apprehended by members of the public on 26 April 2026 after a parcel he intended to send to Sapele was discovered to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Witnesses reportedly carried out a citizen’s arrest before handing him over to the police team led by ASP Nuhu.
Instead of following standard operational procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the already-apprehended suspect.
Police authorities described the action as professional misconduct, abuse of office, and an unlawful killing, stressing that no criminal allegation justifies extra-judicial action.
The Police Service Commission has ratified the dismissal of the indicted officers, while the case file has now been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.
Meanwhile, the driver who delivered the parcel from Yenagoa and two vigilante members connected to the incident are still on the run, with tactical teams reportedly tracking them for arrest.
The Force assured the family of the deceased and Nigerians that justice would be pursued transparently and that no officer would be shielded from accountability.
