IWD 2026: NAWOJ Demands Urgent Action To Boost Women’s Leadership In Nigeria

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2026, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has issued a strong call for urgent and deliberate action to advance gender equality and increase women’s participation in leadership across Nigeria.

In a statement marking the global celebration, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Aishatu Ibrahim, and the National Secretary, Wasila Ladan, emphasised that the occasion should go beyond celebration to a renewed commitment towards justice, inclusion and empowerment for women.

The association noted that the 2026 theme, “Accelerate Action Now,” underscores the need for concrete steps to dismantle long-standing barriers that limit women’s participation in governance, economic development, and national leadership.

NAWOJ observed that despite the immense contributions Nigerian women make to families, communities, businesses and various professions, they remain significantly underrepresented in positions of authority and decision-making.

The association therefore urged women across the country to unite, organise and boldly claim their rightful place in leadership and national development.

NAWOJ also paid tribute to the resilience of women in communities affected by insurgency and violent conflict, acknowledging their courage in rebuilding lives, raising families and sustaining hope amid displacement and hardship.

While reaffirming its commitment to amplify the voices of women and girls through the media, the association called on government, political parties and institutions to dismantle discriminatory structures and support affirmative policies that guarantee greater representation of women in governance.

NAWOJ further encouraged women nationwide to strengthen networks of solidarity and actively step into leadership spaces in order to build a more inclusive and equitable future for Nigeria.
