Love Turned Lethal: How A 26-Year-Old Boyfriend Killed His Girlfriend In Anambra

What began as an intimate relationship has ended in tragedy, once again exposing the deadly consequences of unresolved conflicts and violence within homes and relationships.
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Awka, the Police
Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on January 7, 2026.
Police debunked circulating reports claiming the killing was carried out by creditors to whom the suspect allegedly owed money, describing such narratives as false and misleading.
During interrogation, Chibuike reportedly confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, leading to her death.
The incident allegedly occurred around midnight on December 9, 2025.
According to investigators, the suspect claimed he was driven by suspicions of infidelity and emotional distress following financial losses incurred while trying to establish a business for the deceased.
He further admitted to planting a fake letter alleging that he had been kidnapped by creditors in a bid to divert attention and evade arrest.
Detectives have since visited the mortuary where the victim’s body was deposited, as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed conversations around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes in the community.
The Police Command urged residents to adopt lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and encouraged the public to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent similar tragedies.
Police confirmed that the suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
