Culture commands respect, but when tradition morphs into terror, the law must step in, and in Awgbu, that moment has arrived.

The Anambra State Police Command has pulled back the veil on a violent masquerade that rattled the Awgbu community, identifying the person behind the mask as 28-year-old Ifesinachi Ezeolu.

The revelation follows mounting public anger over reports of assaults, intimidation, and harassment linked to the masquerade’s recent outing.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga made it clear that while the Command respects the people’s cultural heritage, tradition cannot be a shield for criminality.

He stressed that masquerade displays, like any public activity, must be peaceful and lawful.

The police confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to track down other persons involved in the incident.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents that the Command will work with traditional rulers and community leaders to promote peaceful cultural practices while firmly sanctioning anyone who abuses tradition to harm others.

Residents of Awgbu have been urged to remain calm as the police pursue all culpable parties.
