A swift response to a distress call has once again exposed the dark underbelly of child trafficking, as the Anambra State Police Command uncovered a syndicate allegedly exploiting young girls under the guise of shelter.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, busted a suspected child trafficking network in Aguleri, rescuing 33 underage girls from a house along Emma Pigin Road.

A 37-year-old woman, identified as Ifeoma Success Anthony, was arrested during the operation.

The breakthrough followed a report by relatives of three missing girls, Divine Mbam (14), Nwagu Favour (15) and Oke Blessing (18), who were allegedly abducted from Ebonyi State on September 26, 2025, and later sighted at the Aguleri location.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the building was allegedly used for child trafficking and prostitution. The property is said to belong to one Mrs Ngozi Nnanyelugo, aged 45, who is currently on the run.

Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the principal suspect and unravel the full scope of the operation, including identifying other accomplices linked to the crime.

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to aid investigations.
