Court Order Halts Enforcement Of Tinted Glass Permit – Police Suspends Exercise Nationwide
In what appears to be a major relief for motorists across the country, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit, following a court order restraining the exercise.
The suspension, announced on Tuesday, comes amid growing public concern over alleged harassment and extortion of motorists by security operatives under the guise of enforcing the regulation.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, police decision is in full compliance with a subsisting court order halting the enforcement of tinted glass permits, pending the determination of a suit challenging the legality of the exercise.
Adejobi noted that while the Police remain committed to ensuring national security, respect for the rule of law remains paramount.
He urged officers to desist from further enforcement actions related to tinted glass permits until due legal clarification is made.
He further advised motorists to remain law-abiding and cooperate with the Police in maintaining internal security, emphasising that other traffic and safety laws would continue to be enforced.
The tinted glass permit policy, introduced years ago to curb crimes facilitated by the concealment of vehicle interiors, has been a subject of controversy, with many citizens decrying its perceived abuse by security personnel.
Legal and civil rights advocates have welcomed the suspension, describing it as a step towards curbing arbitrary enforcement and promoting respect for citizens’ rights.
As the case continues in court, Nigerians are watching closely to see whether the policy will be restructured or permanently scrapped in line with evolving security realities.
