NCDC Warns Nigerians To Brace For Chikungunya Risk Amid Global Outbreaks and Flooding
With flooding on the rise and mosquitoes finding more breeding grounds, health experts are sounding the alarm over a little-known but fast-spreading viral disease Chikungunya.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory, urging citizens to stay vigilant as outbreaks sweep across several countries.
While Nigeria has not yet recorded any confirmed cases, the agency warns that climate conditions, especially heavy flooding, could pave the way for the disease to spread.
Chikungunya, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, causes fever, joint pain, headaches and rashes.
The NCDC also cautions that the same conditions fuelling its spread heighten the risk of other mosquito-borne illnesses such as yellow fever and dengue.
In its advisory, the agency outlines global developments, key symptoms, transmission modes, and practical prevention tips for individuals and communities.
It also details steps being taken by the NCDC and partners under the One Health approach to protect the public.
The agency calls on the media to help spread the word and keep communities informed.
