FG Urges Nigerians Abroad To Register With Foreign Missions For Safety

The Federal Government has advised Nigerians travelling abroad to register with Nigerian embassies or consulates in their host countries to ensure timely assistance during emergencies.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, gave the advice in Abuja while receiving members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), led by Chairman Idehai Frederick.

He cited a recent incident in the Central African Republic, where some Nigerians were trapped, as an example of why early communication with missions is crucial. “Make your presence known to the Nigerian mission on arrival, not when trouble starts,” he urged.

Ambassador Dunoma also stressed the importance of combating misinformation and called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry and DICAN to promote an accurate and positive image of Nigeria globally.

He commended the association for its maiden Diplomatic and Security International Conference, which gathered diplomats, security experts, academics, and civil society to discuss global safety.

DICAN presented him with an award of excellence, with Mr Frederick praising the Permanent Secretary’s commitment to working with the media to project Nigeria positively.
