Sanwo-Olu Bars Newly Elected Lagos Chairmen From Making Key Political Appointments

In a bold move aimed at streamlining governance, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered all 57 newly elected Local Government and Council Development Area Chairmen to halt the appointment of key political office holders with the exception of a Chief of Staff.

The directive, signed by Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, makes it clear that appointments of Supervisors, Special Advisers (SAs), and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) must be suspended until further notice.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who issued the instruction during the recent swearing-in of council chairmen, cited the need for focused leadership and fiscal discipline in the early days of the new administration at the grassroots level.

“You are enjoined to note the above and revert any appointment that has been made except the Chief of Staff,” the circular stated in strong terms, warning that any unauthorised appointments must be immediately reversed.

The Governor’s directive is widely seen as a move to keep local administration lean, eliminate political excesses, and ensure alignment with the broader goals of his government.

Observers say the clampdown sends a clear message that the Sanwo-Olu administration is serious about accountability and efficient service delivery.
