Vandalism of electricity infrastructure continues to threaten reliable power supply, prompting the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, to convene a ministerial committee to strengthen the protection of critical assets and bring offenders to justice.

At its inaugural meeting in Abuja, the committee brought together key security agencies and government officials to develop measures to curb attacks on generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, officials of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Ministry of Power.

Participants resolved to enforce existing anti-vandalism laws, deploy technology to safeguard power assets and intensify public sensitisation to prevent attacks.

The committee will work with ONSA’s critical infrastructure unit to coordinate security efforts and define the responsibilities of relevant agencies.

It is expected to reconvene next week to review progress, with the ultimate goal of reducing vandalism-related outages, cutting repair costs and improving electricity supply to homes and businesses.
