DICAN Hosts Inaugural Diplomatic and Security Conference to Address Global Challenges and Disinformation

The Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is set to hold its first-ever International Diplomatic and Security Conference in Abuja.

With the theme, “Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Amidst Global Security Challenges, Strategic Misperceptions, and the Age of Disinformation: The Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media in Shaping National and Global Stability”, the event promises to be a landmark gathering at a time of increasing global uncertainty.

The high-level conference slated to take place at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will explore the strategic role of Nigeria’s foreign policy within today’s shifting world order. It will also unpack how diplomacy, intelligence, and the media can work together to strengthen both national and global stability.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, will deliver the keynote address. Attendees will include former Nigerian presidents, governors, lawmakers, heads of security and intelligence agencies, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps.

A thought-provoking panel session will feature prominent voices, including the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the National Security Adviser, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Professor Sheriff Ghali of the University of Abuja.

The conference will spotlight Nigeria’s 4Ds foreign policy strategy – Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora – with the aim of enhancing public understanding of how these pillars shape the country’s global outlook.

One of the key highlights will be a session on Disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) – a pressing issue in today’s digital landscape where misinformation can spread like wildfire. Experts will dissect the risks posed by disinformation and explore effective countermeasures to protect Nigeria’s national interests.

DICAN describes the event as “a critical platform at the intersection of diplomacy, national security, and the media,” adding that it will foster rich dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders navigating Nigeria’s global engagements.

Journalists, diplomats, policy experts, and academics are encouraged to attend and contribute to what promises to be an enlightening exchange of ideas.
