Football fans across Africa can look forward to more frequent continental action following the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s decision to restore the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to its traditional two-year cycle.
The decision has prompted CAF to amend its commercial rights tender, opening the door for prospective partners to bid for the next three editions of the tournament scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033.
In a notice issued on 2 November, CAF said the amendment followed a unanimous decision by its Executive Committee on 29 October to return the competition to a biennial format.
The revised Invitation to Tender, initially published on 23 July 2026, covers the commercial rights for the finals and qualifying matches of all three editions, following the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027.
The move is expected to provide greater clarity for commercial partners seeking to invest in one of Africa’s biggest sporting properties, while restoring a more regular rhythm to the continent’s flagship football competition.
CAF said the amendment confirms the years covered by the ongoing tender process.
