African Journalists Urge Stronger China-Africa Media Partnership After Exchange Programme
First-hand experience, rather than second-hand narratives, offers the clearest picture of a nation’s progress.
That was the key message from a delegation of African journalists who have returned from a media exchange programme in China, praising the country’s development achievements and calling for stronger cooperation between African and Chinese media organisations.
The 19-member delegation from Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia made the call during a farewell visit to Vice Minister Ma Hui of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC), following a 10-day exchange programme in Ningxia and Beijing.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Chairman of the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN), Frederick Idehai, described the programme as enlightening, saying it provided participants with the opportunity to witness China’s poverty reduction efforts, rural development initiatives and governance model firsthand.
He highlighted the transformation of goji berry farming in Ningxia into a sustainable source of income through government support, technology and cooperative business models, noting that the experience demonstrated the value of consistent public policies, accountability and long-term planning.
Idehai also urged African journalists to promote balanced, contextual and fact-based reporting on China-Africa relations, stressing that the partnership now extends beyond infrastructure and trade to include media, culture, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
The delegation called for more media exchange programmes and deeper collaboration between African media organisations and Chinese institutions to strengthen mutual understanding and support development-focused journalism.
