Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deeper regional and international military collaboration as African defence leaders seek stronger strategies to combat terrorism, transnational crime and emerging security threats across the continent.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, led Nigeria’s delegation to the 2026 African Chiefs of Defence Conference in Luanda, where military chiefs and international partners discussed innovation, economic development and collective security from June 30 to July 2.
Addressing the conference, General Oluyede called for a resilient and adaptive African security architecture capable of responding to evolving threats.
He advocated stronger regional intelligence sharing, improved border management, enhanced defence partnerships and intensified efforts to cut off terrorism financing.
The Defence Chief also praised the bilateral defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as a key factor in improving the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and strengthening regional security.
On the sidelines of the conference, General Oluyede held bilateral meetings with fellow defence chiefs and strategic partners to deepen cooperation against cross-border security threats.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterated that intelligence sharing, joint operations and regional partnerships remain vital to defeating violent extremism, drug trafficking and other transnational crimes across Africa.
