As social media continues to shape public opinion on security matters, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has cautioned Nigerians against the indiscriminate recording and circulation of police-related video content, warning that it could undermine security operations and weaken officers’ morale.

Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja, the IGP stressed the need for responsible public engagement and accurate reporting on police activities.

While reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, transparency and respect for human rights, Disu said recordings involving police personnel should not be used to harass officers or distort the realities of policing in a challenging security environment.

He expressed concern over the growing trend of recycling old or manipulated videos and presenting them as current incidents, noting that such actions fuel misinformation, create panic and undermine national security efforts.

The IGP revealed that police officers now operate under intense pressure, often working around the clock to combat crime and insecurity.

He disclosed that the Federal Capital Territory Police Command alone lost about 140 officers last year through violent attacks, accidents and other duty-related incidents.

Despite the challenges, Disu maintained that the Force remains committed to disciplining erring personnel and upholding professional standards, while also protecting officers carrying out lawful duties from harassment and deliberate misinformation.

He described journalists as critical partners in promoting public safety and called for sustained collaboration between the police and the media to ensure accurate, balanced and responsible security reporting.

Earlier, Chairman of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria, Festus Fifen, pledged the association’s continued support for national security efforts through factual and responsible journalism.

He also called for improved access to credible information during security incidents to curb speculation and misinformation.
