FCT To Review School Textbooks, Introduce New Approved Book List

As education systems evolve, the quality and relevance of the books placed in pupils’ hands can shape how effectively they learn.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration is therefore set to review textbooks and other educational resources used in its schools.
The FCT Education Resource Centre (FCT-ERC) announced the planned review at the 31st Annual FCT Book Fair, where officials reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving learning resources and strengthening the reading culture.
The Mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Dr Danlami Hayyo, represented by the Director, Department of Quality Assurance, Hajia Titilayo Alayande, said the review was approved by the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike.
According to him, the exercise will ensure that textbooks align with the current National Curriculum and meet required standards of quality and relevance.
Publishers will be invited to submit materials for professional assessment before a new recommended Book List is produced for schools.
He, however, stressed that the existing approved Book List remains valid and should continue to be used until the new list is officially released.
The Acting Head of the FCT Civil Service, Mrs Nancy Nathan Sabanti, represented by the Director, Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Department, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, described the book fair as more than an exhibition, saying it promotes reading, knowledge acquisition and quality education.
The Director of FCT-ERC, Dr Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, said the annual event, which began in 1996, had grown into an academic hub where schools, teachers, parents, publishers and learners could access curriculum-based textbooks and other educational materials.
She said the Centre was also showcasing publications including the Information Handbook on FCT Schools, Book List, examination guidelines, past question papers and counselling materials.
The month-long book fair brings publishers, booksellers, authors and education stakeholders together, with organisers urging parents, teachers and students to take advantage of the platform and cultivate a stronger reading culture.
