Award, Accountability and Agenda: Obareki Tasks Media On Responsible Journalism

In a time when public trust in institutions increasingly hinges on credible storytelling, the role of the media has once again taken centre stage in shaping governance outcomes and societal progress.

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, in recognition of her contributions to social development, humanitarian service, and impactful interventions through the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA).

The award was presented at the 2026 Dinner and Awards Night of the Correspondents’ Chapel, alongside the unveiling of Critique Magazine, held at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo.

Represented by the Member representing Urueoffong Oruko/Udung Uko State Constituency, Rt Hon Precious Selong, Lady Obareki expressed appreciation for the honour, while emphasising the indispensable role of responsible journalism in nation-building.

She underscored that journalism must remain rooted in objectivity, balance, and truth, noting that it goes beyond mere praise or criticism to asking the right questions, verifying facts, and providing context that empowers citizens.

Reflecting on the theme of the event, “From Insight to Action: The Role of the Media in Shaping the ARISE Agenda Legacy,” Obareki described it as both timely and forward-looking, urging the media to move beyond reportage to actively shaping developmental outcomes.

She stressed that the credibility of institutions and the success of the ARISE Agenda, the policy blueprint of the Akwa Ibom State Government, largely depend on how effectively it is communicated and embraced by the people.

Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Bassey Akra, described the gathering as a strategic platform for media professionals to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development trajectory.

He noted that the ARISE Agenda remains a viable framework for addressing key developmental challenges if properly articulated and implemented.

Chairman of the occasion and Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Senator Ita Enang, highlighted the media’s critical role in strengthening democratic values, commending the Chapel for its sustained contributions to democratic growth in the state.

In his keynote address, Chairman of Top Faith University, Dr Emmanuel Abraham, urged journalists to align reportage with the development vision of Governor Umo Eno, positioning the media as a vital partner in driving progress through informed and constructive engagement.

The event also had in attendance notable women leaders including Dr Inemesit Uwah, Hon Inibehe Silas, and Mrs Emem Orok.
