In a time when misinformation continues to challenge public health efforts globally, stakeholders in Nigeria are reinforcing a simple but powerful message, science must lead the way.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH&SW), in collaboration with the World Health Organization, marked the 2026 World Health Day with a symbolic awareness walk in Abuja, drawing attention to the importance of evidence-based healthcare.

The event, themed “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” saw health professionals, development partners, media practitioners, and citizens converge at the Old Parade Ground in Garki.

The procession moved through major routes before culminating at the Federal Ministry of Health, creating visibility for the campaign and sparking conversations around health literacy and trust in science.

The Federal Government through the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, at the event, reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to affordable and efficient healthcare.

The Minister of State, noted that several initiatives have been introduced to expand access to quality healthcare services nationwide.

“We remain committed to ensuring that all Nigerians can access affordable and efficient healthcare,” he stated.

Also speaking, Pavel Ursu of the World Health Organization underscored the significance of the day, which marks the founding of the global health body on April 7, 1946.

Highlighting the 2026 theme, “Together for health, stand with science,” Ursu emphasised the critical role of science in improving health outcomes and saving lives.

He noted that regular physical activity, at least 30 minutes daily, remains essential for both physical and mental wellbeing.

He, however, warned against the dangers of health misinformation, urging Nigerians to rely on trusted, evidence-based sources when making health decisions.

Participants described the walk as more than just a ceremonial activity, noting that it reflects a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through research, innovation, and informed decision-making.

The commemoration forms part of broader efforts by the government and its partners to promote healthier communities and improve access to reliable health information across the country.
