CLO Seeks Emergency Declaration Over Anambra Erosion Crisis
The erosion crisis in Anambra State is fast becoming a threat to lives, homes and vital transport routes, with the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) calling for urgent federal intervention before more communities are cut off.
In a statement issued in Awka, the CLO Anambra State Branch urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on erosion in parts of Idemili North, Idemili South and Aguata Local Government Areas.
The group said major locations, including the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Ugamuma in Obosi, Ekwulobia, Oba, Ogidi and Umuchu, were facing severe erosion damage, putting homes and properties worth billions of naira at risk.
CLO Chairman, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, and Secretary, Comrade Chidi Mbah, urged the President to deploy the Ministers of Works and Environment for an immediate assessment and direct emergency containment works pending permanent intervention.
The organisation also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief to affected and displaced residents.
CLO commended Engr. Eric Anyaneme for undertaking palliative erosion-control works and road rehabilitation in Obosi, while also praising Senator Victor Umeh for visiting affected communities and pledging to raise the issue with the Federal Government and National Assembly.
The group said urgent action was needed to prevent the erosion crisis from becoming a wider humanitarian and infrastructure disaster.
