2027 Polls: INEC Opens Consultations Over Ramadan Clash, Assures Inclusive Access

With faith, logistics and voter turnout colliding on the 2027 electoral calendar, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is consulting stakeholders over concerns that key election dates fall within the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

INEC has fixed 20 February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and 6 March 2027 for governorship and state assembly polls, with party primaries scheduled between 22 May and 20 June 2026.

The dates have drawn criticism from some Nigerians, particularly Muslims, who warn that fasting and reduced physical exertion during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and the efficiency of officials and observers.

Former PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and ex-presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, have publicly urged INEC to reconsider the February 20 date, noting that Ramadan is expected to run from 7 February to 8 March 2027 and calling for inclusiveness in scheduling.

Responding, INEC said the timetable was set in line with the Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022 and its Regulations, which fix national elections for the third Saturday of February, with governorship polls two weeks later.

However, the Commission acknowledged the concerns and confirmed it is consulting stakeholders and may seek legislative intervention where necessary, while remaining bound by constitutional provisions.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and credible elections, promising to update the public on any adjustments.
