INEC Defends 2027 Election Dates, Says Review Possible After Consultations

As political actors jostle for early advantage ahead of 2027, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its newly released election timetable remains valid but open to review where necessary, following consultations and possible legislative intervention.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) clarified that the dates fixed for the 2027 General Elections were determined strictly in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s own Regulations and Guidelines.

INEC, in a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said it has received representations that some aspects of the timetable could affect voter participation and the overall conduct of the elections.

According to the Commission, long-standing regulations stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections hold on the third Saturday of February, with governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections following two weeks later.

On this basis, INEC fixed Saturday, 20 February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, 6 March 2027 for the Governorship and State Assembly polls.

The Commission disclosed that it is engaging stakeholders and may seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the concerns raised, stressing that any adjustment must remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, assuring Nigerians that the public will be duly informed of any further developments.
