Rule Of Law, Not Raw Force: Basiru Urges Whole-of-Government Approach To Insecurity
At a time when insecurity continues to test Nigeria’s democratic resilience, the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has warned that force alone cannot secure the nation without firm adherence to the rule of law.
Speaking at the 4th Distinguished Personality Lecture of the College of Law, Osun State University, Basiru said democratic governance, national security and the rule of law are “interwoven and mutually reinforcing”, arguing that weak institutions ultimately weaken security outcomes.
He charged the Executive to uphold the Constitution, urged the Legislature to deepen oversight, called on the Judiciary to guard its independence, and challenged citizens to demand transparency and accountability.
The former Senate spokesperson stressed the role of civil society and the media in security accountability, warning that misinformation and propaganda fuel ethno-religious tensions.
He also advocated for state police, noting that a single, centrally controlled force struggles to deliver swift, localised responses to complex security threats.
According to him, decentralised policing would improve community engagement, intelligence gathering and operational speed.
Basiru urged Nigeria to move beyond diagnosis to action, insisting that strengthening the rule of law and public trust will better position the country to withstand current threats and model democratic resilience in Africa.
The lecture was attended by Ondo State Governor Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, APC NWC members, Osun State University leadership and traditional rulers.
