Senate Grills Defence Ministry As Terror Attacks Intensify Nationwide
With communities across Nigeria still reeling from fresh terror attacks, the Senate has raised the alarm over what it described as a troubling security situation, grilling the Ministry of Defence during its 2026 budget defence session.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Lawan, said the review was taking place at a particularly difficult moment for Nigerians, as insecurity continues to claim lives and disrupt livelihoods in several parts of the country.
He stressed that the rising wave of attacks calls for more decisive and coordinated action.
“This budget defence is happening at a very challenging time for Nigerians, given the persistent insecurity across several regions.
“We must intensify efforts to confront these threats,” Lawan told officials of the Ministry during the review of its 2025 budget performance.
Responding, the Minister of Defence, Major General Christopher Musa (Rtd), acknowledged the scale of the security challenges but assured lawmakers that military operations are ongoing and yielding positive outcomes.
He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and restoring peace nationwide.
Following the open session, the committee moved into a closed-door meeting to deliberate on sensitive operational issues, projects and budgetary allocations presented by the Ministry.
