Transparency Push: Senate Moves To Strengthen Auditor-General’s Office

With public trust in how government funds are managed under growing scrutiny, the Senate has pledged stronger legislative backing for the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation to tighten transparency and accountability.

The assurance came during the budget defence session of the Auditor-General’s office at the National Assembly, where Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Aliyu Wadada, reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to strengthening the institution.

He stressed that better coordination and standardised financial record-keeping across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) is crucial to effective oversight.

“The Office of the Auditor-General plays a critical role in safeguarding public funds.

“We are committed to strengthening the institution to ensure proper coordination and standardisation of financial records across MDAs,” Wadada said, adding that the committee would push for adequate budgetary support.

Earlier, the Auditor-General of the Federation, Shaakaa Kanyitor Chira, presented the office’s 2025 budget performance and appealed for increased funding to enhance audit processes and oversight functions, noting that stronger support would further boost transparency and accountability in public finance management.

The session forms part of ongoing legislative scrutiny aimed at reinforcing financial oversight and good governance.
