US To Deploy Additional 200 Troops For Nigeria As Security Ties Deepen

At a time when Nigeria is seeking stronger international backing to tackle terrorism and transnational crime, Washington is reportedly moving to deepen its security footprint in the country.

The United States is finalising plans to deploy 200 additional troops to Nigeria to strengthen ongoing security collaboration between both countries, according to The New York Times.

The proposed deployment would reinforce a small contingent of American special forces already operating in Nigeria, supporting local troops with intelligence gathering and counter-terrorism operations.

Last week, the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin R. Anderson, confirmed that a team of U.S. experts had been dispatched to Nigeria as part of renewed military cooperation.

He said he met President Bola Tinubu, noting that both sides agreed on the need to work more closely on regional security challenges.

The additional troops are expected to support U.S. personnel who have been on the ground for weeks, helping Nigerian forces identify potential terrorist targets using a mix of American surveillance assets and Nigerian intelligence.

Washington’s renewed focus on Nigeria reportedly intensified after the United States redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged religious freedom violations, claims the Nigerian government has firmly denied.

Amid rising diplomatic tension, President Tinubu recently sent a high-level delegation to Washington, led by National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to engage U.S. officials and reaffirm Nigeria’s position.
