‘Lost Daughter’ Returns As Former ADC Woman Leader Defects To APC In Abuja
In Nigeria’s fluid political space, defections are often a barometer of shifting loyalties ahead of key elections, and Abuja witnessed another such realignment on Tuesday.
The former National Woman Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Kayauta Yakubu, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing her assessment of governance and development under the APC-led administration as the reason for her move.
Yakubu was formally received at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja by the APC National Woman Leader, Dr Mary Alile-Idele, alongside party officials, supporters and political associates.
The APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, was also present.
Speaking on behalf of the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Alile-Idele described Yakubu’s defection as a move from “a sinking ship to a moving train,” adding that the ruling party remains open to Nigerians willing to contribute to national development.
She praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for reforms, infrastructure development, empowerment initiatives and the student loan scheme under NELFUND, which she said is improving access to higher education.
“This is a growing and inclusive party. Anyone who believes in national development is welcome,” she said, urging Yakubu to mobilise women and supporters ahead of the forthcoming elections.
In her remarks, Yakubu stated that she joined the APC voluntarily, emphasising that she was impressed by the progress in security and development under the current administration.
The Kuje-born politician from Rubochi Ward, FCT, said she had returned to a party she once belonged to during the merger era, describing herself as a “lost daughter” who has now come back home.
Welcoming her return, the APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, described Yakubu as a founding member of the APC with strong grassroots mobilisation capacity, expressing confidence that her defection would strengthen the party ahead of the Area Council elections.
