Onitsha South Unveils Youth-Led ‘Environmental Marshals’ To Clean Up The City

Clean cities don’t happen by chance, they’re built by people who care enough to protect their streets. Onitsha South is betting on its youths to help bring back the city’s lost sparkle.

The Onitsha South Local Government Council has announced plans to launch an Environmental Marshal Programme to enforce sanitation laws and restore the city’s cleanliness, in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of a more liveable Anambra State.

Mayor Emeka Orji unveiled the initiative at a stakeholders’ meeting with youth leaders from the 17 wards, stressing that environmental responsibility must be a shared duty.

Drawing on the discipline of past sanitation drives, he said the council is determined to revive a culture of cleanliness across Onitsha South.

Under the programme, trained youths from each ward will serve as environmental marshals, monitoring compliance with sanitation rules and apprehending offenders.

The council will also establish ward offices to support enforcement, while landlords’ associations and youth leaders will hold regular engagements to spread environmental guidelines.

Authorities warned that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and littering, including throwing sachet water and nylon bags on the streets, will attract fines and sanctions.

The council says the reforms will be backed by closer coordination with environmental health officials to ensure strict compliance.

If effectively enforced, the youth-led initiative could mark a turning point in the push to reclaim Onitsha South’s environmental standards and public spaces.
