Soludo Draws Red Line For Masquerades As Viral Misconduct Sparks Clampdown In Anambra
In a state where masquerades are symbols of identity, spirituality, and communal pride, recent viral videos of disorderly behaviour have forced Anambra authorities to balance tradition with public order.
The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning to masquerade groups following reports of unruly conduct that circulated widely on social media, triggering public concern.
In a public service announcement dated January 16, 2026, the Ministry of Culture, Entertainment and Tourism reiterated that existing regulations governing masquerade activities remain fully enforceable across the state.
The government stressed that no masquerade is allowed to intimidate residents, obstruct movement, harass motorists, or disrupt public peace.
Performances, the statement added, must be confined strictly to designated community spaces to avoid traffic gridlock and security breaches.
Authorities have directed security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and presidents general of town unions to ensure full compliance with the rules.
Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Donatus Nduka Onyenji, who signed the statement, noted that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo remains a strong supporter of cultural heritage and festivals, but insists that celebrations must align with modern civic responsibility.
The ministry confirmed that some offenders have already been arrested and are facing prosecution, warning that further violations will attract similar sanctions.
While calling for respect for cultural traditions, the government urged residents to uphold Anambra’s heritage with dignity, discipline, and decency.
