Bulldozers Roll In Onitsha As Soludo Tightens Grip On Illegal Buildings
When access roads become private property, city life grinds to a halt, and Anambra State says enough is enough.
The Soludo administration has stepped up its clampdown on illegal structures in Onitsha, demolishing unauthorised buildings that blocked public routes and flouted planning laws.
The latest enforcement operation, carried out by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB), targeted Bida Road off Nwangene Street in Onitsha South Local Government Area, where a property owner had built over an access road linking neighbouring streets.
Armed with heavy machinery, including a payloader, officials swiftly removed the offending portions of the structure and restored free passage for residents and traders.
Speaking at the scene, the Executive Secretary of the Onitsha South Local Planning Authority, Mrs Chioma Egwuonwu, said the owner had ignored multiple removal notices and proceeded with the illegal obstruction.
In a related move, the team also visited Oguta Road in the Ekenedilichukwu axis, where a building under construction lacked government approval.
Part of the structure was pulled down as a warning to other defaulters.
Residents applauded the exercise, saying it protects public spaces and prevents building collapses.
The government reiterated that monitoring of construction will continue from foundation stage to ensure safety and orderly urban development.
