Not In Uniform, But On The Same Side: Police Clarify Status Of Anambra Education Commissioner

In a state where public trust in security agencies is gradually being rebuilt, unusual allies are emerging from unexpected quarters.
One such ally, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, recently caught public attention for her visible enthusiasm for policing activities, prompting the police to step in with a clarification.
The Anambra State Police Command has stated that Prof. Chuma-Udeh is not a police officer, despite widespread assumptions fueled by her frequent association with police activities.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the police, the Commissioner’s interest reflects growing public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force rather than any formal enlistment.
Ikenga explained that while Prof. Chuma-Udeh is not a serving officer, she is a member of the Police Supernumerary (Spy Police) Unit, a voluntary and supportive arm of the Force.
He noted that members of the unit are not regular police personnel and do not carry arms or engage in core policing duties such as patrols, investigations, or arrests, even though they may wear police uniforms.
Their role, he said, is largely supportive and symbolic of community partnership.
The Command described Prof. Chuma-Udeh as a “police-friendly citizen” whose disposition underscores increasing acceptance of the police in Anambra State.
It also used the opportunity to encourage eligible youths to consider careers in policing, stressing that community participation remains key to sustainable security.
The Police reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, strong community relations, and collaboration with stakeholders in maintaining peace and security across the state.
