New Commander, Renewed Resolve: Aliou Tine Takes The Helm Of ECOMIG In The Gambia
In a region where stability often hinges on quiet professionalism rather than loud declarations, leadership transitions within peace missions can speak volumes about continuity and resolve.
Colonel Aliou Tine has formally assumed duty as the new Force Commander of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), pledging unwavering commitment to regional security and the conduct of peaceful elections.
The handover ceremony, held on Thursday, 8 January 2026, at the ECOMIG Headquarters in Bakau, marked the official transfer of command from the outgoing Force Commander, Colonel Ndiagne Diouf.
The solemn event was symbolised by the exchange of the ECOMIG command flag, a military tradition signifying the passage of authority and responsibility.
Addressing officers and dignitaries, Colonel Tine emphasised close collaboration with Gambian authorities and the armed forces as central to sustaining peace and democratic stability in the country.
The ceremony attracted high-level attendance, including the Senegalese High Commissioner to The Gambia, the National Security Adviser, representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff, senior officers of the Gambia Armed Forces, contingent commanders, and personnel of ECOMIG.
Colonel Tine’s appointment comes at a critical time, as the sub-region continues to prioritise security cooperation and credible electoral processes as pillars of democratic governance.
