FG Reaffirms Commitment To Troops As Armed Forces Honour Fallen Heroes At 2026 AFCRD Dinner

Beyond the pomp and pageantry, the strength of a nation’s military is measured by how it remembers its fallen and supports those still standing guard.

That message resonated strongly in Abuja on Tuesday night as the Federal Government restated its commitment to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Armed Forces hosted the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner Night at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, in an atmosphere of solemn remembrance, tradition and camaraderie.

Speaking on behalf of President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), described AFCRD as the heartbeat of Nigeria’s military heritage.

He said the event was a moment to celebrate the courage and professionalism of serving personnel while honouring fallen heroes who paid the supreme price for the nation’s sovereignty.

General Musa praised Nigerian troops for confronting complex asymmetric threats with resilience under extremely demanding conditions, noting that the nation’s peace and security are built on their vigilance and sacrifice.

He also paid tribute to the families of fallen soldiers, describing them as silent pillars of national sacrifice.

The Defence Minister reassured officers and men of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to improving welfare, logistics and operational capacity, stressing that the President remains resolute in ensuring the Armed Forces are well-equipped, motivated and supported.

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Oluyede, described the Regimental Dinner Night as one of the Armed Forces’ most cherished traditions, blending remembrance with discipline and pride in service.

He commended troops across various theatres of operation for strengthening civil-military relations and called for a whole-of-society approach to tackling security challenges.

The evening also featured the presentation of medals and awards to senior officers in recognition of gallantry, meritorious service and outstanding contributions to national defence.
