Catholic Order Distances Itself From Disruptive Incident At Nnewi Cathedral Dedication
In moments meant for solemn worship, even a single act of disruption can echo far beyond the walls of the church.
That reality played out in Nnewi, Anambra State, where an unfortunate incident briefly overshadowed the dedication of a cathedral meant to symbolise faith, unity and reverence.
The Knights of St John International, Supreme Subordinate Commandery, Nigeria, has formally condemned the conduct of one Mr James Okoye, following an incident that occurred during the solemn dedication of the Nnewi Diocese Cathedral on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.
In a disclaimer signed by its Supreme Subordinate President, Major General Sir Joachim Chuks Amamgbo (rtd), the Catholic order made it clear that the individual’s actions were completely inconsistent with the values and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of St John.
The leadership of the Order described the behaviour as unusual and unacceptable, stressing that respect for the Church and her clergy remains sacrosanct.
It assured the Church and the public that the matter is being addressed with the seriousness it deserves, in line with the Order’s constitutional and disciplinary provisions.
The Knights of St John also tendered an apology to the Church and its spiritual leaders for the embarrassment caused, while reaffirming their commitment to service, spirituality, discipline, charity, honour and respect, ideals for which the Order is known.
