Wike Should Quit FEC Or Leave APC Alone – Basiru Fires Back
Political tensions within Nigeria’s ruling party deepened on Monday as the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, launched a blistering attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of meddling in APC affairs without legitimacy.
In a strongly worded statement dated 5 January 2026, Basiru described Wike’s criticism of his comments on party leadership in Rivers State as “uncouth” and unbecoming of a Federal Executive Council member.
He insisted that governors remain the recognised leaders of the party in their states and said such a position should not attract personal attacks.
Basiru stressed that Wike is not a member of the APC and therefore lacks the standing to interfere in the party’s internal matters.
He dismissed allegations that he and other APC leaders were scrambling for a purported ₦600 billion largesse in Rivers State, branding the claim “cheap blackmail” and challenging Wike to prove it in court.
The APC scribe also brushed aside what he termed veiled threats from the former Rivers governor, reminding Wike that his support for President Bola Tinubu does not translate into APC membership.
According to him, Wike’s conduct mirrors the political culture of the PDP and poses a risk to internal cohesion in Rivers State.
Basiru concluded by calling on Wike to resign as minister if he intends to continue influencing or destabilising APC structures, arguing that it is dishonourable to use the leverage of an APC-led government to foment confusion within the party.
