Army Celebrates Unity and Service As 34 Artillery Brigade Hosts WASA 2025 In Imo
Beyond drills and deployments, the Nigerian Army continues to use culture as a powerful tool for unity, morale, and national cohesion, a tradition once again on display in Imo State.
The Headquarters 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army on 3 January 2025 hosted the West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025 at the Obinze Barracks Parade Ground, bringing together troops, families, host communities and dignitaries in a colourful celebration of heritage and professionalism.
The Special Guest of Honour, Air Commodore DE Bello, Commander 511 Quick Response Group, Owerri, described the Nigerian Army as a unifying institution that draws strength from Nigeria’s diversity.
He urged officers and soldiers to remain disciplined, loyal and professional in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
Earlier, the Brigade Commander and Land Component Commander, Operation UDOKA, Major General IM Abbas, explained that WASA is an annual tradition marking the end of training activities while promoting unity, cultural integration and strong civil–military relations.
He noted that the celebration reflects the Army’s rich history dating back to the West African Frontier Force and aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of a professional, combat-ready and resilient force.
Major General Abbas commended the Imo State Government, traditional rulers and security stakeholders for their continued support, which he said has boosted morale and operational effectiveness within the Brigade’s area of responsibility.
The event attracted top government officials, security agencies, His Royal Highness Dr EC Okeke, the Eze Imo, and football icon Nwankwo Kanu.
Highlights included cultural displays, presentation of souvenirs, the Beating of the Retreat and the lighting of the bonfire.
