WASA 2025: Army Vows Final Push To End Insurgency As Troops, Families Celebrate In Maiduguri
As soldiers paused from the frontlines to celebrate tradition and unity, Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East received a renewed boost, with the military leadership reaffirming its determination to bring the decade-long conflict to a decisive end.
At the Combined West African Social Activity (WASA) 2025 held at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, the Theatre Commander, Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, pledged that troops would intensify operations to dismantle the remaining pockets of terrorist elements across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
He said the relative peace being enjoyed in many communities was a product of the resilience, sacrifice and professionalism of troops, operating in line with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff.
Major General Abubakar also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Service Chiefs, noting that improved logistics and personnel welfare had strengthened operational effectiveness.
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani, commended the military for its sustained efforts and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continued collaboration for lasting peace.
He also paid tribute to fallen soldiers and wished injured personnel a speedy recovery.
The colourful WASA ceremony featured cultural displays, a tug-of-war between the Army and Police, comedy performances, awards to outstanding soldiers, and the traditional lighting of the bonfire symbolising unity, resilience and renewed hope for peace in the North-East.
